This is part five of a five part series ALL about meal planning! Today we’ll be looking at making your list, spending intentionally, and saving! If you’re following us on Instagram @thedeliberateday, send us a DM with the word “bonus” and we’ll send you a link to our free mini meal planning kit which has a beautiful meal planning template in it that encourages you to put your schedule right on there, AND it’s an 8-day planner so you can work in that planning and shopping day!

Build Your List (00:45)

Your list acts as your guidepost for saving money, spending intentionally, and ensuring you have the best chance for success while following through with your meal plan this week.

Pull out the menu you created and print out any recipes you’ll be using this week. Working from your menu and your recipes will ensure you have what you need on hand, right when you need it!

Bonus tip-print out those recipes! This makes list-building easier because you have everything right in front of you! It’s also easy to take them with you to the grocery store, to make quick alterations, if items are out of stock or not on sale (or if the item is more than you want to pay and you want to sub it out).

If you print your recipes, you’ll have them available in the kitchen to use while you’re cooking, or to hand off to a child who’s practicing meal mastery. You can make notes on them as you cook, and you can add them to your family favorites binder.

Bonus tip-create a family favorites binder and put those recipes in it (include notes), so if your family loves it, you’ll have it!

Pull out your ‘shopping list’ page (if you don’t have our mini-meal planning kit, get it here). You’ll notice there are three columns (we recommend using one column per store, and use a column for what you already have on hand).

Bonus tip-check the amounts of what you have on hand-to ensure you have enough!

Pick Your Shopping Day (03:15)

You NEED to pick a day to shop and stay consistent! Pick a day and GO shopping! Go with a friend, find an accountability partner, make it something you look forward to!

Commit to Your List (03:45)

Committing to the list you made is what will really save you money.

Bonus tip-keep a tally as you’re walking through the store so you can make alterations or decisions on the fly!

When Britt shops, she always keeps tabs on what she’s buying, because it allows her to make good, real-time decisions. Many things can go back if necessary-Britt does this all the time!

There is no shame in putting stuff back. Making smart decisions on the fly is what will save you money in the long run. Being adult-y little -by-little like that, that’s where you’re building the habits that will keep you doing this again and again, and meeting the goals you want to meet.

While you’re shopping, you might want name-brand cream cheese, but the store-brand will be $1.00 cheaper. If you’re keeping a tally, you can make a good on-the-fly decision that will keep you in budget!

Recap (05:00)

  1. Make a detailed list considering your menu and the recipes you’re trying out this week.

  2. Choose your shopping day, don’t let your shopping day choose you.

  3. Commit to the list.
